Legislation to create an advanced licensure pathway for respiratory therapists has been approved by the Ohio House of Representatives. State Representatives Marilyn John (R-Richland County) and Tom Young (R-Washington Twp.) sponsored House Bill 253, which aims to expand access to respiratory services for patients with cardiopulmonary disease and other respiratory conditions.
The bill introduces the Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist (APRT) license, establishing a regulatory framework intended to increase the number of qualified providers in Ohio. According to Rep. John, “Providing a high-quality, well-educated workforce is key to providing high-quality medical care in the State of Ohio and that is what this bill does.”
Rep. Young added, "By officially recognizing and licensing the Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist (APRT) role, this legislation validates the pioneering educational excellence of programs like The Ohio State University's MRT, and will deliver more accessible, specialized, and quality patient care, securing a stronger and healthier Ohio.”
Under House Bill 253, advanced practice respiratory therapists must obtain a license from the State Medical Board. The legislation outlines criminal penalties for violations and details specific services APRTs may perform under physician supervision, including administering, ordering, and prescribing drugs and medical devices.
The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
