City of Centerville issued the following announcement on April 7.

Recent Remodels

Undertaking a major home remodel involves plenty of planning – and plenty of patience. The City is highlighting three families who found a way to make their dream home out of their existing home.

The Olson Family

When Jason and Jessica moved to Centerville in 2015 with their four kids, they fell in love with the Pleasant Hill neighborhood. “Our kids could walk to so many parks and to school as well. It was ideal for a family,” Jessica said. Their four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house on Bradstreet Road was a little outdated, so they made upgrades and added another half bath and two bedrooms. Converting and updating the kitchen and dining room has been their biggest project.

The Kilroys

It was 2005 when Kelly and Miriam Kilroy moved to Talbrook Court with their then four- and six-year old. Right away we knew the kitchen was too small and we never used the dining room or living room. We spent all our time on the lower level.

The Compton Family

Chris and Jamie Compton have added a set of twins and a five-year-old since they moved to Centerville in 2013. They love their home in Pleasant Hill with its community feeling and easy access to Interstate 675. They are big fans of the mature trees surrounding their home—and being able to walk to Uptown for Marion’s and Bill’s Donuts.

Olsons: Jason came up with a plan to bump out the existing kitchen and dining room space, going out an additional 12 feet and 22 feet across, adding 264 square feet to our home overall. Thankfully living in Centerville, we had a lot of equity in our home because we’re in a great area. This addition allowed us to not just extend the kitchen and dining space, and make it more functional for our family, but we also added a half bath on the main level and a walk-in pantry. It truly is our dream kitchen.

 Kilroy Before Kilroy After
Kilroys: We opened our tri-level home’s galley kitchen and small living room. We knocked out every wall and made it one great room. We loved the location and did not want to move. Now our kids are grown and in college and we will love our remodeled home. It is timeless and very functional, a great gathering space.

Compton Before Compton After
Comptons: In 2019, we took on a major kitchen remodel. (Yes, Chris is Mayor Compton’s son!) You can see the results in the photos. We knew we wanted to stay in our neighborhood. Our house was built in 1969, and we like to think things were a bit simpler for children then. This neighborhood still offers this to our kids.

What do you love about living in Centerville?

Olsons: We love the sense of community—people really help each other here, and there is a feeling that we are living this life together. That really became clear during the pandemic—which is when we did our renovation. We have met so many great people since moving here. We love to decorate our home for Halloween and Christmas and that has also allowed us to meet so many amazing people. The schools are excellent, and we love the amenities like parks we can walk to, and nature preserves, and bike trails. Our kids go fishing at Benham’s Grove, and we can walk down to watch the Americana parade and fireworks in the summer. Our kids can walk to Bill’s Donuts on the weekends for a treat. It’s a great place to live.

Kilroys: We love the location! We are close to a beautiful park and miles of woods. There are tons of trails to walk on. The Centerville and Washington Park District continue to improve the parks so we enjoy them daily. The Centerville school district is another great asset and really prepares kids for a strong future post high school.

Comptons: Obviously, the schools are phenomenal.  We have been through Primary Village North, and I can’t say enough superlatives about how wonderful that place is.  Mindy Cline, the principal, is simply the best.  She makes each student and parent feel special and heard. We are currently at Stingley Elementary and it’s equally as wonderful. The community is safe, and I feel comfortable letting my kids play in the neighborhood with their friends. I enjoy having a large greenspace, and we do a lot of entertaining outside.

Note: Centerville programs like the Community Reinvestment Area provide temporary property tax relief on the increase in value that results from major renovations or expansions of existing buildings and on the construction of new structures. Incentive periods range from 10-15 years. Residential properties at least 25 years or older qualify for the program. For more information, call the Development Department at (937) 433-7151.
