State Representative Phil Plummer has cast his vote in favor of Senate Bill 24, which seeks to designate the 1905 Wright Flyer III as Ohio's official state airplane. The bill was passed by the Ohio House of Representatives on Wednesday. The Wright Flyer III, piloted by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Huffman Prairie near Dayton, is recognized as the first practical airplane, having flown for 39 minutes and 24 seconds on October 5, 1905.

"Dayton has long been recognized as the birthplace of aviation," stated Plummer. "It was an honor to vote to cement the Wright Flyer III, Dayton’s very own, as our state’s official airplane."

The Wright Flyer III holds the distinction of being the only airplane in the United States designated as a National Historic Landmark. The aircraft underwent restoration under Orville Wright's guidance in 1947 and is currently exhibited at the Wright Brothers Aviation Center within Carillon Historic Park in Dayton.

The legislation now awaits consideration by the Governor.
