State Representative Phil Plummer has announced the passage of House Bill 131 by the Ohio House of Representatives. The bill, which received bipartisan support, seeks to prohibit law enforcement agencies from imposing quotas for arrests and citations.
The proposed legislation aims to prioritize the quality of police work over the quantity of tickets issued. It intends to foster positive relationships between community members and law enforcement officers. Currently, it is legal for officers to be required to issue a certain number of tickets each day.
"Eliminating departmentally mandated citation quotas will help improve police and community relations," said Plummer. "It will allow officers the ability to utilize discretion and common sense."
The bill has garnered support from both the law enforcement community and civil justice reform advocates. It now awaits consideration by the Ohio Senate.
