These days, the term "Strategy Games" is normally associated with games that simulate an adventure or conflict. Abstract Strategy Games are very different.
The easiest definition of Abstract Strategy Games is a game without a storyline. Chess, Checkers, and Mancala are some of the more common examples. In these games, pieces move following a specific set of rules, normally without the use of dice. (The use of names like "queen" and "bishop" in chess sometimes cause people to ask about a story line. It is helpful to note the ways the pieces are used is not governed by any social constructs.)
This series of gatherings would explore a variety of Abstract Strategy Games from all over the planet, some thousands of years old, others modern. After the rules and history of the game are shared, those in attendance will have an opportunity to play one or two rounds of the featured game against their fellow participants.
Fees: $30.00 (M), (NM), (NR)
Instructor: John Loomis
During his entire 33 year career at Oakwood Junior/Senior High School, John Loomis opened his classroom at lunchtime to share thought provoking abstract games. To indulge the constant desire of his students for something new, John has been shopping, reading, and otherwise searching for interesting games for decades. These sessions are being offered in the hopes of finding a community of enthusiasts interested in strategic game play.
